As JH Greene & Son ramps up to attend the “The Who’s Who In Building & Construction” Showcase in Philadelphia on April 13th, the importance of properly vetting sub-contractors is a top of mind consideration. As we look to expand our network with local suppliers, contractors, and subs, the reality is clear that project success is largely connected to subcontractor workmanship. With project quality and effective sub management so closely tied, construction managers observe certain watch-outs to ensure they’re in the clear.
Some important notes to remember when hiring subcontractors:
– Begin by clearly establishing project scope with special requirements outlined such as jobsite access, surface protection, cleanup, etc. Use as much detail as possible with plan drawings and project specs so that all questions are answered.
– Confirm the subcontractor’s experience and capabilities match well with the job requirements
– Do your research: understand if the subcontractor has a good record of safety/overall positive reputation – seek references from previous projects to grasp if there is any associated risk.
– Ensure the subcontractor is properly insured and has all necessary licenses.
– Make sure your contract covers all bases clearly and concisely: scope of work, pricing, and payment scheduling should all be noted.

As far as management of subs is concerned, if trustworthy people are selected, they’ll perform high-quality work. The only additional component needed is open communication to remain aligned on project goals, scheduling specifics, quality standards, and any conflicts that may arise.
Knowing the quality local workers that are available and attending the 2016 Blue Book Who’s Who In Building & Construction Philadelphia Showcase, JH Greene looks forward to exhibiting at the event and connecting with like-minded construction partners. The Philadelphia “Who’s Who” Showcase is designed to be a day of networking and education that focuses on industry news, trends, and tips to help enhance construction business’ efficiency and effectiveness.
